You've Cleaned the Drum and the Gasket. The Smell Is Still There Because of This Spot.

The drum's been cleaned, the door gasket's been wiped down, and the smell is still there every time the washing machine door opens. It's tempting to assume the mold is just winning — but there's a specific, easy-to-miss spot that keeps reseeding the problem regardless of how thorough everything else has been.

The Twist: Mold Below 60°C Isn't an Exception, It's the Default

Mold generally only dies at temperatures above 60°C, which means a habit of washing in cold water — common for most everyday loads — leaves mold essentially undisturbed inside the machine no matter how much detergent is used. Combine that with a machine that closes back up humid after every wash, and the interior stays in mold-friendly condition almost continuously. Cleaning the visible parts well doesn't fix this if the actual growth is happening somewhere structurally hidden from view.

The Blind Spot: The Detergent Tray's Rail and Ceiling Space

The detergent dispenser tray gets pulled out and pushed back in every laundry day, but the rail it slides on and the space above and behind it are genuinely hard to see into even with the tray fully removed — which is exactly why residue and mold collect there while the drum and gasket, both far more visible, get all the cleaning attention. Pull the tray completely out and scrub the rail and the surrounding cavity specifically, not just the tray itself. This is the spot most routine cleaning skips entirely, and it's frequently the actual source of a smell that seems to persist no matter what else gets cleaned.

The Single Habit That Matters Most: Leave It Open After Every Wash


Closing the door and detergent tray right after a cycle finishes traps residual humidity inside a sealed space — which is close to ideal mold-incubation conditions. Opening both fully after every wash and letting the interior dry out completely is a small habit that does more for long-term mold prevention than any single cleaning session.

Handling the Gasket, Drain Filter, and Hose in the Right Order

For the gasket: dilute bleach at roughly one cap per 1.5 liters of cold water, soak wipes in it, press them against the gasket, and let them sit for about 40 minutes before wiping the area completely dry.

For the drain filter and hose, order matters. Open the residual water hose cap first to drain out whatever water remains — skip this step and you'll get an unexpected spill once you pull the filter. Only after that's drained should you remove the dust screen and drain filter, rinse them under running water, and let that housing air out empty before putting everything back.

Deep Cleaning the Tub

Use 2 cups of sodium percarbonate or a dedicated tub cleaner, or alternatively fill the machine with hot water to its maximum level, add a cup of citric acid, let it soak for an hour, then run the machine for 1–2 hours. If residue remains visible afterward, run one or two additional rinse cycles.

The Nearly-Free Habit Worth Adding: Hot Water Alone, Biweekly

Running the machine on hot water with no detergent at all, once every two weeks, removes a substantial share — commonly cited as over 80% — of buildup clinging to the drum's exterior surface over time. This is a distinct habit from both a deep tub-clean and routine toothpaste maintenance, and it costs essentially nothing beyond the water and electricity for a single cycle.

The Trap: Mixing Bleach With Hot Water or Vinegar

Combining bleach with hot water risks releasing hazardous gas and corroding metal components inside the machine, and bleach combined with vinegar produces the same gas risk from a different angle. Pick one treatment for a given cycle — bleach, hot water alone, or a percarbonate/citric acid soak — rather than layering them together expecting a stronger combined result.

A full cleaning routine every 3 months is a reasonable target, but the daily habit of airing the machine out after each wash is what actually makes that quarterly effort last instead of getting undone within the first humid week afterward.
