Hot Water Doesn't Just Feel Wrong on Your Glasses. It Physically Cracks the Coating.

Breathing on glasses and wiping them with a shirt sleeve gets treated as a harmless shortcut, and rinsing them under hot tap water feels like the more thorough clean. Both habits cause real, permanent damage — and the hot water problem in particular isn't just chemical. It's a physical mismatch between two layers of the lens that expand at different speeds.

The Twist: Heat Cracks the Coating Through Expansion, Not Just Chemistry

Anti-reflective (AR) coatings are made of ultra-thin inorganic metal oxide layers sitting on top of a polycarbonate or high-index plastic lens. Hot water heats both layers, but the plastic lens expands considerably faster than the harder metal oxide coating can keep pace with. That mismatch forces the coating to crack into microscopic spiderweb lines — a condition called crazing. It's structural damage, not a chemical reaction, and once it happens it can't be polished or cleaned away.

The same thing happens without water involved. A hot car dashboard in direct summer sun applies the same kind of sustained heat, and over time that heat alone breaks the molecular bond holding the AR coating in place, leading to peeling and haziness.

Why Soap Choice Still Matters Separately

Bar soap, shampoo, and glass cleaners like Windex carry additives, fragrance, or a pH that's noticeably acidic or alkaline. Used repeatedly on a lens, those chemicals gradually erode the ultra-thin metal oxide layer through a slower, chemical process — separate from the physical cracking heat causes, but just as damaging over time. Neutral liquid dish soap is specifically formulated to cut through facial oils while staying pH-inert, which is exactly why it's the one product that does the job without contributing to either kind of damage.

The Actual Cleaning Sequence

Rinse first, before any cloth touches the lens. Run both sides of the glasses under a gentle stream of cold water before wiping anything. This clears away hard dust and grit that would otherwise get ground into the lens surface during the wipe itself.

Apply one drop of neutral dish soap to your fingertips. Rub your fingers together to work up a light foam, then spread it across both lens surfaces, the nose pads, and the temples.

Rinse thoroughly under cold water until every trace of soap is gone, including out of the crevices around the nose pads.

Dab dry with a clean microfiber cloth only. Never use a tissue, paper towel, or shirt — the wood fibers in paper products and the coarse weave of most fabric leave fine scratches behind. Dab gently rather than rubbing back and forth.

The Trap: Treating "Not Boiling" as Safe Enough

The costliest assumption here is that lukewarm or moderately warm water is fine as long as it isn't scalding. The expansion mismatch that causes crazing starts well before water gets anywhere near boiling — cold water is the actual safe zone, not "anything short of hot." The same logic applies to storage: a hot dashboard isn't just uncomfortable for the frames, it's degrading the coating through the same heat-driven mechanism, just without water as the trigger.
