Baking Soda Isn't Losing to Summer Heat. It Was Never Built for This Fight.

Baking soda in the trash can used to be enough. Lift the lid these days, though, and the smell hits before the lid is even fully open — as if the baking soda stopped working the moment summer arrived.

It didn't stop working. It was only ever equipped to handle half the problem, and summer just made the other half much worse.

The Twist: The Smell Isn't the Problem, It's a Symptom

Baking soda is genuinely good at one specific job: adsorbing odor molecules that already exist, trapping them so they don't reach your nose. What it can't do is stop the bacteria producing those molecules in the first place. In hot, humid weather, decay speeds up and bacteria multiply aggressively inside a trash can — so new odor gets generated continuously, faster than a passive adsorbent can keep pace with. Baking soda isn't failing here. It's fighting a source problem with a tool that was only ever designed to manage the symptom.

Why Mouthwash Actually Targets the Source

Mouthwash contains ethanol and antiseptic compounds like menthol, specifically formulated to act directly on the bacteria causing bad breath in your mouth — and that same antimicrobial action works just as well on the bacteria producing odor inside a trash can. Instead of masking or absorbing smell after the fact, it goes after the microbial activity actually generating it. That's the fundamental difference: one approach manages odor after it exists, the other reduces how much gets created in the first place.

What Actually Works: Dilute, Spray, Wipe

Mix water and mouthwash at a 1:1 ratio in a spray bottle — that's the entire preparation step.

Spray it right after emptying the trash, coating the bottom and walls of the empty bin thoroughly, then wipe it down with a dry cloth. Spraying the inside once more before putting in a fresh liner adds an extra layer of protection against odor working its way out through the bag over time.

There's no need to do this daily. Once per trash emptying is enough to keep the bacterial load from building back up between cleanings.

Beyond the Trash Can: Where Else This Works

Mouthwash's antimicrobial action isn't limited to garbage bins. Dampen a cloth or cotton swab with it to wipe down frequently touched surfaces — a phone screen, door handles, a remote control, a keyboard — for a meaningful reduction in the bacteria that accumulate there. It also works for toothbrush hygiene: soak the bristles in mouthwash for about a minute, then rinse thoroughly. Used at full strength (undiluted) on a bathroom faucet, mirror, or sink, it can help cut through limescale while leaving a bit of extra shine behind.

The Trap: Treating This as a Full Replacement for Real Disinfectant

Mouthwash contains alcohol, so avoid spraying it near open flame and use it somewhere ventilated rather than in a sealed space. It's also worth treating this as a genuinely useful supplementary measure rather than a substitute for a proper disinfectant when one is actually called for — mouthwash helps meaningfully, but it isn't formulated or tested as a general-purpose surface disinfectant. Repeated use on certain plastics can also cause gradual discoloration from the alcohol content, which is worth keeping an eye on if you're applying it to the same surface regularly.

Baking soda hasn't gotten worse at its job. It's just doing the only job it was ever built for — and pairing it with something that actually targets the bacteria is what closes the gap summer heat keeps opening up.
