Boiling Water Isn't the Fix for a Clogged Bathroom Sink. It Might Be the Cause of a Bigger Problem.

A bathroom sink drains slower and slower until it stops altogether, and the instinct is to reach for the kettle — boiling water feels like the strongest, most direct response to a stubborn clog. It's also the move most likely to cause damage that has nothing to do with the actual clog at all.

The Twist: This Isn't a Kitchen-Sink Problem, and It Doesn't Need Kitchen-Sink Heat

A kitchen sink clogs mostly from food debris and grease, which is why heat and grease-dissolving cleaners make sense there. A bathroom sink or tub drain is a different problem almost entirely — roughly 99.9% of bathroom sink clogs come down to hair, which tangles inside the drain trap or pipe and physically blocks water flow. Once that hair mixes with soap residue or toothpaste buildup, the clog gets worse and harder to clear. None of that responds to heat the way grease does — and pouring near-boiling water down a bathroom drain risks a separate problem: PVC pipe generally tolerates heat only up to around 60°C, so water close to 100°C can warp the pipe or cause it to leak.

What Actually Works: Remove the Hair Physically First

Start with the pop-up stopper. Most bathroom sink clogs begin right around it. It's usually attached with a twist-lock mechanism — turning it counterclockwise typically releases it, letting you pull out tangled hair directly by hand.

If hair remains deeper in the drain, a plastic cable tie works as an improvised tool. Cut a few small notches along one end, push it down into the drain, and pull it back up slowly — the notches catch hair and debris on the way out.

Water pressure is another option. Fill a 1.5-liter plastic bottle with water, invert it, and press it firmly into the drain opening to force pressure through the clog.

Chemical Treatment: Match It to What's Actually Causing the Clog

If the clog seems soap-scum or grease related, pour in a cup of sodium percarbonate and follow with hot water to dissolve it.

If hair is the primary issue, a chemical drain cleaner formulated specifically to break down hair (which is largely protein) is the more appropriate choice — this is a different job than dissolving soap scum, and picking the right product for the actual cause matters.

Pour it in thirds, not all at once. Add the first third, wait 10 minutes, add the second third, wait another 10 minutes, then add the final third. After roughly 15 minutes total, the hair should have broken down.

The Trap: The Habits That Turn a Simple Clog Into a Bigger Repair

Skip the boiling water entirely — use 70–80°C water instead. This gets you real heat for dissolving grease-related buildup without pushing PVC pipe past its heat tolerance.

Don't dump an entire bottle of drain cleaner in at once. Doing so risks corroding metal fittings or damaging the sink's finish — the staged, three-part pour isn't just about effectiveness, it's about controlling exposure.

Be cautious about disassembling an older sink's trap and rubber fittings. In sinks that have been in place a long time, these parts have often hardened, and forcing them apart to clean and reassembling them can leave gaps at the joints — which shows up later as a slow leak rather than a solved clog.

Prevent most of this from recurring with a few small habits: rinse the sink with water after each use, brush-clean it periodically, and use a drain strainer to catch hair before it ever reaches the trap.

If a clog is severe or the plumbing is old enough that disassembly feels risky, that's the point to call a professional rather than pushing a DIY fix further — a clog is a temporary inconvenience, but a cracked pipe or a loosened trap joint is a repair that costs a lot more than the sink cleaner did.
