Covering Your AC's Outdoor Unit While It Runs Does the Opposite of Protecting It

A reflective or waterproof cover over an AC's outdoor unit feels like basic protective maintenance — shielding it from sun and rain the way a car cover shields a windshield. Left on while the unit is actually running, that same cover works directly against it, and the instinct to protect it is exactly backwards in this one specific situation.

The Twist: The Cover Traps the Exact Thing the Unit Needs to Release

An outdoor unit depends on airflow through its intake and exhaust to dump heat generated during operation. A tight-fitting cover blocks that airflow, and the heat that should be escaping gets forced back into the unit instead — raising internal temperature, cutting cooling efficiency, and increasing fire risk all at once. Outdoor units are also built to handle rain by design in the first place, so a cover isn't protecting against anything the unit doesn't already manage on its own. The cover needs to come off entirely whenever the unit is running.

If shade from direct sunlight is the actual goal, a roof-style shade panel positioned tens of centimeters away from the unit — not touching it, not wrapped tightly around it — blocks the sun without blocking the airflow a snug cover does.

The Placement Basics Still Matter

Keep the unit at least 10cm from the wall, with roughly 30cm of clear space around it generally, and 30–50cm of clearance specifically at the intake and exhaust. Boxes, potted plants, or laundry left nearby restrict airflow just as much as a cover would, even without anything directly touching the unit.

Warning Signs Worth Acting On Immediately

Unusual heat, vibration, or noise, a burning smell, visible smoke, or melted marks on or around the unit are all signals worth stopping and inspecting immediately rather than waiting to see if they pass — these can be early indicators of a failing connection or breaking down insulation inside the unit. Dust buildup inside is worth checking periodically too: it both raises spark risk and insulates components in a way that can lead to melting under sustained heat.

The Trap: Treating "Covered" as Automatically Safer

The costliest habit here is leaving a tight cover on the unit specifically while it's operating, on the assumption that more coverage is always more protective. It isn't, in this one case — the cover traps the heat the unit is actively trying to release. A roof-style shade set well away from the unit, combined with keeping the surrounding space clear, protects against sun without creating the heat-trapping problem a direct cover causes.
