Flour Actually Removes Sink Grease. Rinsing It Away Too Soon Creates a New Problem.

Sprinkling flour on a greasy sink is a familiar tip, and it genuinely works — but the part that rarely gets mentioned is what happens right after. Rinse the used flour away immediately, and that same oil-laden powder can clump together inside the drain pipe instead of washing cleanly through it.

Why Flour Actually Works on Grease

Flour's starch content runs 75–80%, with particle sizes in the 10–100μm range — fine enough that these particles genuinely adsorb oil on contact, converting a greasy film into something that wipes away far more easily than it would on its own. This only works dry, though. Water and flour together just make paste, not a working cleaner.

Grease Gets Flour, Water Scale Gets Vinegar — Not the Same Method

Wash the surface with neutral detergent and warm water first, then dry it completely before flour ever touches it — leftover moisture is what causes the starch to clump instead of doing its job. Sprinkle flour thinly over the greasy area, then rub in a circular motion with a dry cloth for 2–5 minutes to let the starch actually make contact with the oil.

Mineral scale — the white, chalky water spots — is a completely different problem and needs an acid, not starch. Dilute vinegar (3–5% acetic acid) with water at a 1:3 to 1:5 ratio, wipe the affected area with a cloth, then rinse and dry thoroughly afterward to keep it from redepositing. Baking soda works as an alternative for scale too, but keep it in a separate step from vinegar rather than combining them.

The Step Almost Everyone Skips: Collecting the Flour Before Rinsing

Finishing the rub-down and immediately running water over the sink risks sending the oil-laden flour straight into the drain, where it can clump inside the pipe. Collect as much of the loose flour as possible while it's still dry first, then check the strainer and drain area for leftover residue before doing a final rinse and dry.

If flour has already gone down the drain, flushing it with 500ml of water above 60°C is the fix.

If It's Actually a Drain Odor Problem, Flour Isn't the Tool

Flour addresses surface grease, not drain smell — those are separate problems. For odor specifically, a baking soda and vinegar combination, or sodium percarbonate left to sit for 30 minutes before rinsing, are better matched to the actual cause.

Check the Surface Before Choosing Either Method

Flour (Mohs hardness 2–3) is safe on harder surfaces like stainless steel, ceramic, and enamel (Mohs 4 and above), but should be skipped on aluminum or Teflon-coated surfaces. Vinegar carries its own material risk too — it can corrode or discolor aluminum and certain coated surfaces, so checking what you're working with matters before picking either method. Anyone with a flour allergy should avoid direct contact or wear gloves during this process.

Sink cleaning isn't really about finding one all-purpose ingredient. It's identifying whether you're dealing with grease or mineral scale, and whether the surface is stainless and ceramic or something coated and more sensitive, before deciding which method actually fits.
