Hot Water Makes a Greasy Plastic Container Worse, Not Better

A greasy plastic container gets rinsed under hot water on the reasonable assumption that heat cuts through oil better than lukewarm ever could. For plastic specifically, that instinct works against you — the container often comes out just as greasy and smelly as it went in, sometimes worse.

The Twist: Heat Opens Up the Plastic Itself

Plastic expands when it's exposed to heat, and that expansion opens up microscopic gaps on the surface. Oil works its way into those gaps rather than rinsing away, which leaves both the greasiness and the trapped odor worse off than before the hot water touched it.

Wipe First, Then Wash Lukewarm

Before the container touches any water, wipe the inside down with a paper towel. This cuts down how much oil the actual wash even has to deal with.

Then wash with lukewarm — not hot — water, a small amount of dish soap, and a couple pieces of paper towel torn up and dropped directly into the container. Close the lid and shake it vigorously for about 30 seconds. The torn paper towel pieces work as an internal scrubbing agent inside the sealed container, reaching surfaces a sponge alone might miss.

For Lingering Stains or Smell

Mix baking soda with water in a 2:1 ratio, apply it to the stained area, let it sit, then wipe clean. Coarse salt rubbed on with a cloth works as an oil-absorbing abrasive too — the same trick transfers well to a greasy pan or stovetop.

For a smell that's really set in — something like kimchi — fill the container with rice rinse water (the cloudy water left over from washing rice before cooking) and let it sit for half a day to a full day before washing normally. It cuts down on lingering odor more than soap alone manages. Rubbing toothpaste on the interior with a cloth, then rinsing thoroughly, tackles smell and light staining together as well.

Drying and the Gasket

Once it's clean, leave the lid open and dry the container in direct sunlight — the UV exposure helps with both sanitizing and clearing residual odor.

The rubber gasket around the lid is easy to overlook entirely during a normal wash. Separate it from the lid with a toothpick and clean the gap underneath directly — that's where real buildup tends to hide.

Tools and Storage

Skip metal scrubbers or stiff brushes; they scratch the plastic, and those scratches become places for bacteria and grime to collect going forward. A soft sponge is the safer choice. Rinse thoroughly too — leftover soap residue is its own problem if the rinse gets cut short.

Dry the container completely in a well-ventilated spot before sealing it up for storage. Sealing it while still damp risks mold and bacterial growth building up inside, undoing whatever cleaning just happened.

The Trap: Reaching for Hot Water by Habit

The costliest habit here is assuming hotter water is automatically the stronger cleaning choice, when for plastic specifically it's the opposite — expanding the material and letting oil work deeper in rather than washing it out. Wipe first, wash lukewarm, and dry fully before sealing: three small adjustments that do more than turning up the water temperature ever would.
