Rinsing a sponge after every use, wringing it out, letting it dry between washes — it feels like a reasonable hygiene routine. Research from Nofima, a Norwegian food research institute, found that a single kitchen sponge can carry more bacteria than there are people on Earth, and that how it's cleaned or dried barely changes that number. The routine was never the problem. The sponge itself is.
The Twist: The Study Found Cleaning Habits Don't Meaningfully Help
Researcher Trond Møretrø and his team, publishing in the Journal of Applied Microbiology, sampled sponges and brushes from homes in Portugal and Norway and measured how much bacteria had built up inside them. The finding that stands out: washing frequency and drying habits had little meaningful effect on bacterial load. Not because people weren't trying — because a sponge's structure works against any cleaning routine you throw at it.
Why Structure Beats Routine
A sponge's surface is riddled with tiny pores, and those pores create countless small, protected pockets where bacteria can settle in and multiply — largely out of reach of surface rinsing no matter how often it happens. The researchers found salmonella, a leading cause of foodborne illness, along with Moraxella osloensis, a bacterium that poses a particular risk to people with weakened immune systems, showing up more often and in greater quantity in sponges than in brushes used for the same job.
Brushes hold up better for two structural reasons. They dry faster than a sponge's absorbent material does, and most have a handle that keeps your hand from directly contacting the contaminated cleaning surface — both of which cut down on how much bacteria actually builds up and transfers.
What the Research Points Toward
Switching from a sponge to a handled brush is the actual recommendation to come out of this — not a better sponge-cleaning routine, but a different tool with a structural hygiene advantage built in.
If you're sticking with a sponge, replace it every 1–2 weeks. Treating it with bleach or vinegar extends how long it stays usable, but the researchers were clear that this only slightly delays bacterial growth rather than solving the underlying issue. A thinner sponge dries faster than a thick one, which helps somewhat, but doesn't change the fundamental structural problem.
Shower Puffs Have a Related Problem
Dermatologists point to a similar issue with shower puffs and loofahs — they hold onto dead skin cells and bacteria, and scrubbing that combination directly into skin can lead to infection. A warm, humid bathroom where the puff never fully dries out is close to ideal conditions for bacterial growth. Wring them out and hang them to dry somewhere cool, avoid using them on the face or genital area, and replace them roughly once a month.
The Trap: Assuming a Careful Routine Solves a Structural Problem
The costliest assumption here is that a genuinely diligent cleaning habit — rinsing, wringing, occasional sanitizing — makes a sponge safe to keep using indefinitely. The research specifically found that it doesn't move the needle much. The porous structure that makes a sponge good at scrubbing is the same structure that makes it nearly impossible to fully clean. A brush with a handle sidesteps that problem by design rather than trying to out-clean it.
