Plain Vaseline Isn't Doing Enough for Cracked Heels. Here's the Fix.

Vaseline gets reached for the moment a heel cracks or an elbow turns rough, on the reasonable assumption that it's the ultimate barrier moisturizer. Applied plain, it often falls short of what people expect. It's not that Vaseline doesn't work — it's that how much you use, and how you apply it, needs to change depending on which part of the body it's going on.

What Vaseline Is Actually Doing

Vaseline's core ingredient, petrolatum, works as an occlusive — it forms a thin oil film on the skin's surface that seals existing moisture in rather than adding new moisture itself. That distinction is exactly why applying it to already-dry skin without anything underneath doesn't deliver the deep hydration people expect from it.

Thick Skin: Layer, Seal, Then Cover

For cracked heels, rough elbows, or dry skin around the nails, mix 2–3 drops of olive oil into the Vaseline before applying. Don't put the mixture on bare dry skin directly — apply a thin layer of body lotion or cream first to actually hydrate the skin, then a thin layer of the Vaseline-and-oil mixture on top of that to seal it in.

Covering the area afterward with plastic wrap or a cotton sock maximizes the sealing effect, essentially creating a small humidity chamber over the spot. For areas with visible creases — the back of the hands, knuckles, knees, ankles — apply the mixture locally rather than spreading it broadly; a thick layer sits differently on skin with visible folds than it does on flat, thick skin like a heel.

Face: Rice-Grain Amounts Only

The face calls for a completely different scale than heels or elbows. Mix Vaseline and olive oil in an amount no larger than 1–2 grains of rice, and apply it only to visibly dry patches, following the direction of your skin's texture, in a thin layer.

Applying it thickly across the whole face isn't recommended — olive oil can trigger breakouts in oilier areas of the face specifically. A very light massage with a small amount is the right approach, and around the nose in particular, wash off any remaining oil afterward with lukewarm water and a cleanser, since oil buildup in that area is more prone to causing trouble than elsewhere on the face.

Not All Petrolatum Is Treated the Same

Petrolatum is only permitted as a cosmetic ingredient when its refining process is fully documented and shown to be free of carcinogens. When choosing a product, favor ones where the refining level and impurity controls are verifiably confirmed rather than assuming every petrolatum-based product meets the same standard.

Even a medically-used ingredient like this doesn't mean more is automatically better — too much produces stickiness before it produces better moisture, and on a sensitive area like the face, excess raises real breakout risk.

The Trap: Treating It as One Universal Moisturizer

The costliest mistake here is applying the same amount the same way regardless of where it's going. Thick skin benefits from the full layer-seal-cover approach; sensitive facial skin needs a minimal, targeted amount instead. If any itching or redness shows up, the right response is to stop using it and watch how the skin responds — not to assume more product will fix it.
