Rinsing Your Glasses Under Water Isn't Actually Cleaning Them

Glasses either get a quick rinse under the tap and called clean, or get scrubbed hard with a heavy dose of soap on the theory that more suds means a better clean. Neither approach is quite right. Plain water doesn't dissolve the oily film — skin oils, dust, sweat residue — that builds up on lenses over daily wear, but overdoing the soap and rubbing directly with your fingers risks scratching the coating that's supposed to be protected in the first place.

The Actual Sweet Spot

Dilute one or two drops of neutral dish soap into lukewarm water, drop the glasses in, and gently swish them for about 20–30 seconds. That's genuinely enough — the combination of a mild neutral cleanser and gentle agitation separates the oil, dust, and sweat residue from the lens surface without needing direct pressure or a heavy dose of anything.

Avoid rubbing the lens surface directly with your fingers. Even light finger pressure can scratch the coating over repeated cleanings.

Clean beyond just the lenses too. The nose pads, bridge, and temple arms all touch skin directly and build up their own residue — skipping them while focusing only on the lenses leaves a real source of buildup untouched.

Water Temperature Matters More Than It Seems

Stick to lukewarm water rather than hot. High heat can damage the lens coating over time, which is an easy detail to overlook when the instinct is usually "hotter water cleans better."

Skip the Tissue, Use a Dedicated Cloth

Wiping lenses with a tissue or paper towel is a common habit, but the rough fiber structure in both is exactly what causes the fine scratches people are usually trying to avoid in the first place. Pat dry with a dedicated dry microfiber cloth instead, or let the glasses air dry — either protects the coating in a way tissue paper doesn't.

What to Avoid Reaching For

Skip hand soap and shampoo. Both are more alkaline than neutral dish soap, and that alkalinity can strip or discolor the lens coating over repeated use — dish soap's neutral pH is specifically why it's the safer everyday choice.

Skip anything with alcohol or ammonia in it too, for the same coating-protection reason.

How Often

Clean glasses with water at least once a week as a baseline, and more often during summer or after exercise, when sweat and oil buildup happen faster.

The Trap: Assuming More Soap or More Scrubbing Means Cleaner

The costliest habit here is treating a heavier hand — more soap, harder scrubbing, hotter water — as automatically more effective. The actual formula is a light dilution, a gentle swish, lukewarm water, and a soft microfiber finish. Skipping the nose pads and temple arms while focusing only on the lenses is the other common miss, given how much residue accumulates in exactly those skin-contact spots.
