Scrubbing a Burnt Pot Harder Isn't the Fix. Something Softer Than the Pot Is.

Burnt-on residue at the bottom of a stainless pot resists a sponge no matter how much detergent gets added or how hard the scrubbing gets. The fix isn't more force — it's reaching for something in the kitchen drawer that's actually softer than the pot itself.

The Twist: A Softer Metal Can Scrape Without Scratching

Aluminum is a softer metal than stainless steel. Crumple a piece into a ball and rub it against a stainless surface, and it scrapes off burnt residue and stuck grease without scratching the stainless underneath — the hardness difference works entirely in your favor here.

That same relationship is exactly why this method is off-limits for anything softer than stainless. Coated or nonstick cookware is softer than aluminum, which means the foil would scratch that coating instead of protecting it. Confirm what the pot is actually made of before reaching for foil — this only works on stainless.

Preparing the Foil Ball

Cut a piece roughly the size of a sheet of A4 paper and crumple it into a ball a bit smaller than a golf ball. Don't compress it too tightly — leaving rough, wrinkled ridges on the surface is what actually does the scraping work. A ball pressed down into something smooth and compact loses the texture that makes this effective in the first place.

Loosening the Stain First

Pour lukewarm water over the burnt area and let it soak for about 10 minutes before scrubbing — this loosens the residue considerably before any physical effort goes in. For deeper, more stubborn stains, adding baking soda and a bit of dish soap to the soak helps further.

Scrubbing and Getting the Most Out of One Ball

Drain the water, add a few drops of dish soap, and scrub with the foil ball in circular motions, the same way you'd use a regular sponge. When the ball flattens out and loses its scraping power, rotate it in your hand to bring a fresh wrinkled section forward rather than tossing it — one ball this way can realistically handle two or three pots before it's actually spent.

For grill grates, roll the foil into a narrower cylinder shape instead of a ball, so it fits into the gaps between the bars.

Rinse Thoroughly When You're Done

Fine aluminum particles can flake off during scrubbing and leave a dark residue behind. Rinse the pot thoroughly under running water once you're finished to clear that off completely.

Disposal

A foil ball that's been used for scrubbing is coated in grease and burnt particulate by the time you're done with it, which makes it non-recyclable — it goes in general trash. If you've got foil that only wrapped grilled meat and hasn't been used for scrubbing yet, though, wiping the grease off and repurposing it for this cleaning method first is a genuinely useful way to get one more use out of it before it's finally discarded.

The Trap: Using This on the Wrong Cookware

The costliest mistake here is applying this method to coated or nonstick pans out of habit, forgetting that the hardness relationship that protects stainless steel works against a softer coating. Confirm the material first, keep the foil ball wrinkled rather than compressed, and a stubborn burnt pot usually comes clean with less effort than another round of scrubbing with detergent alone would take.
