Sneakers Aren't Just Small, Weird-Shaped Laundry

Sneakers go into the washing machine the same way regular clothes do often enough, and the result is sometimes a sole starting to separate or fabric that's noticeably faded afterward. It's tempting to blame the machine itself. The actual determining factors are water temperature and how much prep happens before the wash even starts — skip either one, and the damage that follows isn't really the machine's fault.

Check the Material Before Anything Else

Mesh and fabric sneakers hold up fine in a washing machine. Knit, leather, and suede don't — those call for hand washing or a professional cleaner instead. Once the material checks out, brush off dirt and debris from the exterior and the grooves in the sole with a toothbrush before anything goes near water. Skipping this step lets loose debris circulate through the machine, potentially transferring onto other laundry or clogging the drain.

Take the Laces and Insoles Out Separately

Remove the laces and insoles from the shoe body before washing. If an insole is stuck and won't come loose easily, about 30 seconds of heat from a hairdryer softens the adhesive enough to lift it out cleanly.

Setting Up the Machine

Place the shoe body in a padded, shoe-specific mesh bag, and pin the zipper shut so it can't work open mid-cycle. Adding 3–4 thick towels into the load cushions the impact inside the drum as it spins. Set the water temperature to 30°C or below, and choose a delicate or wool cycle — a slow-spin cycle works as a substitute if your machine doesn't have a delicate setting. Keep the spin speed at its lowest setting; this is specifically what prevents sole warping and adhesive damage during the wash.

Wash the laces and insoles separately, either by hand or in their own mesh bag. Insoles hold onto internal moisture longer than the shoe body does, so they need a longer separate drying time afterward.

Drying Determines Whether the Wash Was Worth It

Air dry the shoe body in a shaded, well-ventilated spot. Skip the dryer, a space heater, and direct sunlight entirely — all three cause shrinkage, discoloration, or adhesive damage that a careful wash won't survive. Stuffing crumpled paper inside the shoe while it dries helps it hold its shape and absorbs residual moisture at the same time.

Keeping It Up Afterward

Once everything's dry, leave the shoe cabinet door open regularly or run a fan through it to vent trapped moisture — this cuts down on mold and odor building up over time. Rotating between 2–3 pairs rather than wearing the same shoes daily also keeps any single pair from staying damp for extended stretches.

Foot hygiene matters alongside the shoe care itself: wash feet at least once a day, and immediately after sweating, drying thoroughly between the toes each time. Breathable shoes paired with cotton socks help keep feet dry between washes too.

The Trap: Treating Sneakers Like Any Other Load of Laundry

The costliest habit here is skipping the material check and prep steps because sneakers get tossed in with the rest of the wash out of convenience. Hot water or a high spin setting might feel like a faster, more thorough clean, but that's exactly what warps soles and breaks down adhesive. The prep and the settings are what separate a sneaker that comes out fine from one that doesn't — not the machine itself.
