Sugar, Not Stronger Detergent, Is What Actually Breaks Down a Range Hood Filter's Grease

Pulling a range hood filter out for the first cleaning in a while and finding it caked black with hardened grease is a common enough surprise. Spraying it with detergent barely makes a dent — the grease has baked on and hardened well past what a quick wipe-down can handle. Plain sugar dissolved in water does something detergent alone doesn't, through a genuinely different mechanism.

The Twist: Sugar Molecules Chemically Bind to Grease

Sugar molecules carry hydroxyl groups on their surface, and those groups bind to grease and fat molecules, converting otherwise water-insoluble grease into something that dissolves in water. On top of that chemical action, the fine sugar crystals themselves work as a natural physical scrub, mechanically loosening hardened grease from the mesh as they dissolve against it. It's chemistry and physical abrasion working together, not one or the other.

What Actually Works: The Right Ratio and a Long Soak

Dissolve equal parts sugar and water completely — half a cup of each, using a paper cup as a rough measure. Either white or brown sugar works the same way here.

Remove the filter from the range hood before applying anything. Soak wet wipes in the sugar water and press them directly onto the filter mesh, then pour the remaining sugar water over the whole thing so nothing's left untouched.

Let it sit for half a day, or overnight. This is the step that actually determines whether the method works — the hydroxyl-grease binding reaction needs sustained contact time to fully break the hardened grease down, not a quick 10–20 minute treatment the way some other cleaning methods manage.

Peel the wipes off slowly once the soak is done. Grease that's been trapped in the mesh holes comes away stuck to the wipes as you lift them, taking a meaningful share of the buildup with it in one motion.

Finishing Up

Whatever residue remains after peeling off the wipes, scrub it with dish soap and an old toothbrush or cleaning brush, then rinse the whole filter with hot water to clear everything off.

The Trap: Expecting a Quick Result

The costliest mistake here is treating this like a fast spray-and-wipe method and cutting the soak time short. The sugar-and-water mixture needs real time — half a day at minimum — to actually dissolve grease that's had time to bake on and harden. Rush that part, and the same sugar water that would have cleared the filter overnight barely makes a dent in twenty minutes.
