That Bathroom Drain Smell Might Not Be Dirt at All

An unidentifiable smell drifting up from a bathroom drain usually sends people reaching for air freshener first. More often, the actual source is inside the pipe structure itself — specifically, a small amount of water that's supposed to be sitting there and isn't anymore.

The Twist: A Missing 5–10cm of Water Is Often the Real Cause

Every drain trap holds a small reservoir of standing water — generally around 5–10cm deep — that acts as a physical seal, blocking sewer odor and insects from coming up through the pipe. Leave a place unused for an extended stretch, or let pipe pressure shift, and that water can evaporate down below the level needed to maintain the seal, letting sewer smell rise straight through. No amount of surface cleaning fixes a smell coming from a broken seal — the fix is refilling that trap, not scrubbing harder around it.

Two Different Odor Sources Need Two Different Materials

Drain odor generally comes from one of two places, and they don't respond to the same treatment.

Organic decay — hair, soap residue, and skin oils tangled together and breaking down inside a sink or shower drain — responds to baking soda. Its mild alkalinity chemically neutralizes the acidic odor particles that decay produces.

Grease buildup is a different problem entirely. Dish soap's surfactants break oil down into a form that dissolves in water, which is what actually clears grease-based odor rather than just masking it.

What Actually Works: Treat, Wait, Then Flush With Hot Water

Sprinkle half a cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by a tablespoon of dish soap. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes — this dwell time is what gives the chemical reaction enough time to actually work, not just sit on the surface.

After that, flush it with hot water — hot enough to help clear the loosened residue, but not so hot it risks damaging the pipe. Guidance on PVC piping generally points to somewhere around 60–70°C, or mixing hot water with cold to bring the temperature into a safer range.

Boosting the Treatment, and What Never to Add

Vinegar, citric acid, salt, or lemon can all be layered in as extra reinforcement alongside baking soda and dish soap if the smell is stubborn.

Never mix any of this with chlorine bleach, under any circumstances. Combining bleach with baking soda, dish soap, or any of the reinforcing acids above can release genuinely hazardous gas.

Check the Trap Fitting Too

No amount of careful cleaning solves an odor problem if the drain trap itself is loosely fitted — sewer smell can rise straight through a poor connection regardless of how clean everything around it is. After cleaning, it's worth checking that the trap is actually seated and connected properly, not just that the visible parts look clean.

The Trap: Assuming Every Drain Smell Is a Cleaning Problem

The costliest mistake is treating every drain odor as something a stronger cleaner will fix. Organic buildup, grease, and an evaporated water seal are three separate problems, and only two of them respond to scrubbing at all — the third just needs the trap refilled, which usually means running water through that drain regularly enough that it never has the chance to dry out in the first place.
