That Dark Spot on Your Sink Might Be Rust, Not Grime — And That Changes Everything

A dark mark near the drain or along the edge of a dish rack gets the default treatment — sponge, scrub, repeat — on the assumption that it's just buildup. If it's actually rust rather than limescale, that scrubbing accomplishes nothing except risking scratches on a surface that was never the actual problem.

The Twist: Rust and Limescale Need Different Treatments Entirely

The two look similar — both show up as dark discoloration on stainless steel — but they're chemically different problems. Rust responds to an acidic treatment applied thick and left to sit; limescale responds better to dissolved citric acid. Scrubbing blind without figuring out which one you're dealing with either fails to remove anything or scratches the surface trying.

Wipe the area with a damp cloth first to clear away surface dust and grease before deciding what you're looking at. If it turns out to be limescale rather than rust, switch to citric acid dissolved in water instead of the method below.

What Actually Works: Ketchup, Applied Thick and Kept Moist

Ketchup's acidity — from both vinegar and tomato — is genuinely effective on rust, but only if you get three conditions right.

Apply it thick, not thin. A thin layer doesn't put enough acid in sustained contact with the rust to actually work.

Scale the dwell time to how bad the rust is. Light rust needs about 30 minutes; older, heavier rust can need up to an hour.

Don't let it dry out mid-treatment. This is the step most people skip, and it's the one that actually determines whether the method works. Cover the ketchup with a damp paper towel, then wrap plastic film over that to lock in moisture for the full dwell time — a dried-out application stops reacting with the rust and makes the whole process far less effective.

Finishing It Off

Once the dwell time is up, scrub gently — a sponge for broader areas, a toothbrush for corners and tight spots a sponge can't reach. Rinse thoroughly under lukewarm running water until no ketchup residue remains, then dry the surface completely with a towel. Skipping that final dry-down leaves behind exactly the moisture that invites new rust or limescale to start forming again. If the rust hasn't fully cleared after one round, repeat the whole process two or three times rather than scrubbing harder on a single pass.

This same method works just as well on stainless fixtures in the bathroom — shelves, towel bars, soap dishes, and any stainless steel parts in the shower — not just the kitchen sink.

The Trap: Treating Every Dark Spot the Same Way

The costliest mistake is skipping the diagnosis step and assuming every dark mark on stainless steel is the same problem. Rust and limescale need different chemistry, and misidentifying one for the other wastes effort at best and damages the surface at worst. Confirm what you're actually dealing with first, then match the thickness, dwell time, and moisture control to it — that combination is what separates a spot that actually clears from one that just gets scrubbed at repeatedly with nothing to show for it.
