Spraying a foggy bathroom mirror directly with the showerhead, then wiping it down with whatever soap is closest at hand, feels like a harmless cleaning shortcut. A dark brown or black stain creeping in from the mirror's edge over time isn't ordinary grime building up — it's the mirror's silver backing corroding, and that exact cleaning habit is part of what's accelerating it.

The Twist: The Stain Is the Silver Layer Reacting, Not Dirt

A mirror's reflective surface comes from a thin layer of silver on the back of the glass. Moisture reacting with that silver forms silver oxide or silver sulfide, and that reaction is what shows up visually as dark staining spreading in from the edges. A humid bathroom is already a favorable environment for this on its own — silver corrodes faster when it's exposed to alkaline or acidic substances, which is exactly what ordinary soap and bleach-based cleaners are. A little conditioner on a soft cloth, wiped over the glass and then buffed dry, leaves behind a thin film that spreads condensation into a sheet rather than individual droplets — which is what cuts down on fogging for a few days at a time. Use it sparingly and buff it fully dry; too much left on the surface leaves it slippery rather than clear.

The Trap: Mistaking Corrosion for Grime and Scrubbing Harder

The costliest mistake here is treating that dark edge staining as ordinary buildup and reaching for more soap or a more aggressive scrub to clear it. That response accelerates exactly the reaction causing the problem in the first place. Once the silver backing itself has started corroding, no amount of scrubbing brings that section of the mirror back — the better move is switching cleaning habits before the staining spreads any further.
