An empty chip or cracker bag goes straight into the trash without a second look. Flip it inside out, though, and the shiny silver lining staring back at you is doing more than just keeping the snack fresh — paired with a bit of toothpaste, it turns into a genuinely effective scrub tool for the white mineral buildup on a faucet or the greasy residue stuck to a pair of scissors.

The Twist: Two Different Cleaning Jobs, One Combination That Covers Both

Limescale — the chalky white buildup on a faucet — forms when magnesium and calcium dissolved in tap water harden as the water dries, and it's alkaline, which means it breaks down chemically when it meets something acidic. Grease works on a completely different principle. Toothpaste happens to handle both: the calcium carbonate and silica in it act as fine abrasive particles that physically grind away buildup, while its surfactants surround grease and help lift it free so water can rinse it away. Chemical neutralization for one kind of mess, physical abrasion for the other — and the foil lining is what carries that abrasive action smoothly across a surface without scratching it.

Why the Foil Lining Specifically Works

The aluminum layer inside a snack bag is softer than stainless steel, which is exactly why it creates enough friction to scrub effectively without gouging the surface underneath it — the same reason it's a safer scrubbing surface than something abrasive like steel wool.

What Actually Works: Rinse, Squeeze, Scrub in Circles

Rinse the bag first. Give it a light rinse to clear out any oil or crumbs, then let it dry before using it.

Turn it inside out so the foil faces outward, and squeeze on a more generous amount of toothpaste than you'd normally use on a sponge.

Scrub in small circular motions directly on the stained area. This works on the white limescale ring around a faucet, sticky residue built up on scissor blades, and grease clinging to a stainless steel range hood — the same technique applies across all three.

Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Water alone rinses away the toothpaste residue, but drying the surface fully with a cloth afterward is what actually prevents the same buildup from reappearing quickly.

The Trap: Using the Same Pressure Everywhere

Adjust how hard you scrub based on what you're cleaning. A faucet or scissor blade can handle firmer pressure, but a stainless steel range hood is more prone to fine scratches, so a lighter touch works better there than trying to scrub grease off aggressively. And this isn't a universal method — skip anything coated or glossy-finished, since the abrasive action that works fine on bare metal can dull or damage a treated surface.

When you're done, don't just toss the bag. Rinse it out and dispose of it with plastic film recycling if your local system accepts it; if it's too soiled to rinse clean, it's fine to put it in regular trash instead.

Cleaning well doesn't always mean buying a new tool for the job — sometimes it means taking a second look at the packaging you were about to throw away and noticing what it's actually made of.
