A showerhead spraying weaker and more unevenly than it used to gets blamed on the building's water pressure more often than the actual cause: mineral deposits and debris clogging the tiny nozzle holes. Whether you disassemble the head directly or use the well-known vinegar-filled zip bag soak, the sequence you follow matters more than which method you pick.
Two Approaches, Depending on Whether the Head Comes Apart
If the showerhead disassembles easily, taking it apart gives direct access to the internal structure, which is generally the more thorough option.
If it doesn't come apart cleanly, the zip bag soak is the practical alternative — and it's genuinely effective, not just a workaround. Fill a zip-top bag with white vinegar, submerge the showerhead in it, and secure the bag around the neck with a rubber band so the head stays fully submerged. Leave it for a full day.
The extended soak time is what actually matters here. Mineral scale needs sustained acid contact to dissolve — a quick rinse or a short soak barely touches buildup that's had time to harden around the nozzle openings.
Scrubbing the Nozzles Individually
After the soak, an old toothbrush with a bit of toothpaste on it is the right tool for the nozzle holes themselves — small enough to reach into each opening individually, with the toothpaste's mild abrasive helping loosen anything the vinegar soak didn't fully clear. Going hole by hole matters, since an uneven spray pattern usually traces back to a handful of specific nozzles still partially blocked rather than the whole head being equally clogged.
Don't Stop at the Head
Once the nozzles are handled, soak or wipe down the length of the hose too, not just the head itself. Sediment and buildup settle inside the hose the same way they do around the nozzles, and cleaning the head alone only addresses half of where the problem actually sits.
Keeping Up With It
Clean the showerhead at least once a month as a baseline, and every 1–2 months if you're dealing with hard water or heavier household use. Replacement is also a legitimate alternative to constant cleaning — a new head and hose together typically run around $10, and swapping in a fresh set 2–3 times a year is a reasonable approach if cleaning feels like more upkeep than it's worth. When buying new, check for a relevant plumbing hygiene or safety certification mark rather than picking based on price alone.
A couple of extra notes worth keeping in mind: households with someone immunocompromised or managing a chronic condition should shorten the cleaning interval. And if you're returning to a home that's sat empty for a while, run both hot and cold water through fully before using the shower — water that's been sitting stagnant in the line can harbor bacterial growth in the meantime.
The Trap: Cleaning the Head and Ignoring the Hose
The costliest habit here is treating the showerhead itself as the entire problem and skipping the hose, which leaves a real source of buildup untouched. The second is assuming weak spray means a water pressure issue with the building before ever checking whether the nozzles are simply clogged — a full day's soak and a toothbrush usually settles the question either way.
