Toothbrushes: The Toilet Itself Is Part of the Problem
Researchers at Al-Kufa University's College of Dentistry in Iraq had 30 adults use a toothbrush for 3 months, then tested them — 86.6% (26 of 30) came back with bacterial contamination. Separate research measured toothbrushes stored in bathrooms at a bacteria count of 149.46 (×10⁴ CFU/ml), higher than other storage locations tested, with a correspondingly lower pH.
Here's the specific detail worth knowing: toothbrushes in bathrooms that included a toilet showed higher contamination than those in bathrooms without one. Fine aerosol droplets released when flushing are the likely explanation, reaching further than most people assume. Closing the toilet lid before flushing is a small, specific fix that directly addresses this particular contamination pathway — not just general bathroom hygiene advice, but a response to this exact mechanism.
Standard care still applies on top of that: rinse thoroughly after use, dry upright with bristles up rather than in a sealed container, keep multiple brushes spaced apart so bristles don't touch, and replace around every 3 months — sooner if the bristles are visibly splayed.
Sanitary Pads: Contamination Shows Up Within 24 Hours

Since a bathroom's humidity is genuinely hard to eliminate, individually sealed storage — or simply moving frequently-used items to a different room — does more than trying to out-clean the environment itself.
