Running the AC in a sealed room for hours starts to feel stuffy and dry, and the assumption is that's just what air conditioning does. The actual air quality problem isn't spread evenly across those hours at all — it's concentrated in a few specific windows most people never think to ventilate around.

The Twist: Mold Exposure Isn't Constant, It's Front-Loaded

An enclosed room running AC for a long stretch can see indoor humidity drop to around 30–40%, which dries out respiratory mucous membranes and creates a real vulnerability — bacteria that's built up inside the unit can spread through droplets released into that same dried-out air. If opening everything fully isn't practical, even a partial 5–10cm gap provides some real benefit over none at all.

During continuous operation — cross-ventilate for 10 minutes every 2 hours. Open windows on opposite sides of the room at the same time rather than just one, and pause the AC while you do it. Under summer conditions, roughly 10 minutes of this kind of natural cross-ventilation exchanges the room's air about three times over, removing something on the order of 40% of accumulated pollutants according to indoor air quality analysis. In a crowded office with more people breathing the same air, shortening the interval to every 2–3 hours, for 5–10 minutes each time, is worth the extra effort.

Before shutting off — run fan-only or auto-dry mode for about 10 minutes first. This dries out residual moisture sitting in the cooling coil and ductwork before the unit goes idle. Skip this step and that moisture just sits there until the next startup, which means the next round of first-3-minutes mold release ends up worse than it needed to be — turning this into a cycle that compounds if the pre-shutoff step never happens.

The Trap: Treating Ventilation as One Big Daily Task Instead of Three Small Habits

The costliest mistake is opening a window once a day and considering ventilation handled. Each of these three windows addresses a different part of the problem — startup ventilation catches the mold burst, mid-operation cross-ventilation clears what accumulates during continuous use, and the pre-shutoff dry-out prevents the next day's startup from being worse than this one. Skip any single piece and the other two are compensating for a gap they weren't designed to cover on their own.

If anyone in the household is older or has a sensitive respiratory system, keeping a hygrometer nearby and checking that humidity stays in the 50–60% range gives you a concrete way to confirm the routine is actually working, rather than just assuming it is.
