The Gas Stove Grate and the Cooktop Surface Need Two Completely Different Cleaning Methods

Cooking dinner leaves the same aftermath behind almost every time — hardened grease baked onto the burner grate, and dark splatter marks staining the cooktop surface around it. Scrubbing both with the same intensity feels consistent, but it's actually the wrong instinct for at least one of them. The grate can be submerged in liquid to soften what's stuck to it. The cooktop surface structurally can't be, and treating it like the grate risks stripping its coating.

What Actually Decides the Method: Can It Be Submerged or Not

That single distinction — submersible or not — is what determines which cleaning approach actually works without causing damage. Everything below splits along that line.

Soaking the Grate

Dissolve 3 tablespoons of baking soda and one pump of dish soap into hot water in the sink, then submerge the grate completely for about 10 minutes. That soak time is what actually loosens hardened grease enough that it doesn't need aggressive scrubbing afterward — skip the wait and you're back to scraping at something still stuck fast.

Brush it afterward with a soft toothbrush or sponge. Steel wool strips the coating and leaves scratched spots that are prone to rust down the line, so it's worth avoiding here specifically.

When the Grate Doesn't Fit in the Sink

Larger grates that won't fit in a standard sink call for a workaround, not a different method. Pour hot water and baking soda into a thick plastic bag, tie the top, and lay the grate flat so the liquid actually reaches the whole surface. Same 10-minute soak, same underlying principle — this just solves the space problem rather than the cleaning problem.

For grease that's especially stubborn, mix baking soda and water at a 3:1 ratio into a thicker paste, apply it directly, and let it sit for 20 minutes instead of using the standard soak.

The Cooktop Surface Needs a Paste, Not a Soak

Since the cooktop surface can't be submerged, mix baking soda with water into a thick paste instead. Spread it thinly over the stained area, wait 5 minutes, and wipe it off with a dry towel.

Around the burner holes specifically, wipe with a cloth rather than letting water get pushed down into them — water intruding into the internal burner structure is a separate problem from surface staining, and worth avoiding on its own.

Before Anything Goes Back Together

Rinse off residue thoroughly and let everything dry completely before reassembling. Putting the grate back on a cooktop that's still damp lets residue re-bond and bake on again the next time the stove is used, undoing most of what the cleaning session just accomplished.

A Couple of Habits Worth Keeping

Check periodically that the burner holes aren't blocked — a stove that's harder to light or burns unevenly often traces back to this. And choosing cookware with a base no wider than the grate itself makes future cleanup meaningfully easier, since less grease ends up spreading past the grate's edge onto the cooktop surface in the first place.
