A box of baking soda pulled from the back of a cabinet is often well past its printed date, and the instinct is either to toss it without a second thought or wonder whether it's still safe to use at all. Both baking soda and sodium percarbonate are chemically stable compounds — they don't spoil the way food does. What actually changes over time is potency, and the two behave very differently once that potency starts to drop.
Baking Soda: You Can Actually Test How Much Reactivity Is Left
Baking soda's recommended shelf life runs around 3 years, but passing that date doesn't mean the compound has gone bad — it's chemically stable and doesn't spoil in the way food would. What it can lose over time is reactivity, and rather than guessing, there's a direct way to check: pour a small amount of vinegar on it.
Vigorous fizzing means it's still reactive and fine for uses that depend on that reaction. Weak or minimal fizzing means reduced potency — but that doesn't make the box useless, just less suited to jobs that need strong reactivity.
As long as there's no clumping, mold, foreign matter, or discoloration, even a weakly-reacting box still works well for lower-demand jobs: drains, refrigerator odor control, sink and pot scrubbing, or absorbing odor in shoes and trash cans. None of these need full-strength reactivity to actually work.
Sodium Percarbonate Is a Completely Different Story
Percarbonate behaves nothing like baking soda once it's in use. The moment it's dissolved in water, it breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate — that breakdown is exactly what produces its oxygen-based bleaching action. That active reaction is time-limited: roughly 6 hours after dissolving, most of its cleaning and bleaching effectiveness is already gone. This is why percarbonate should only be dissolved in the amount you're about to use right away, never premixed in a larger batch for later.
Never store a dissolved percarbonate solution in a sealed spray bottle or airtight container. As it continues reacting, internal pressure builds up inside a sealed container, creating a genuine explosion risk. Convenient as it sounds to mix a batch and keep it on hand, it's specifically the kind of shortcut worth avoiding here.
Percarbonate in Dry, Powder Form
Poor sealing over time lets the active-oxygen-producing component gradually decline even before it's ever dissolved, weakening its bleaching and sanitizing power. If it isn't significantly clumped, older percarbonate powder can still be repurposed for pre-soaking white laundry before boiling it, or for cleaning a washing machine drum — lower-stakes uses that don't demand full original strength.
Manufacturer guidance points to cool, dry storage. Transferring it from its original cardboard box into a zip bag or airtight container, kept somewhere with low humidity, holds up considerably better over time than leaving it in the cardboard box it came in.
The Trap: Treating Every Expired Product the Same Way
The costliest mistake runs in two directions. Tossing a perfectly usable box of baking soda without testing it wastes something that likely still works fine for most household jobs. The opposite mistake is using old percarbonate for something that needs full strength — laundry whitening or precise baking — without accounting for the real potency loss involved, or worse, storing a premixed percarbonate solution in a sealed container for later use. Match the product's actual condition to the job: test baking soda with vinegar before deciding, and treat percarbonate's active window as strictly limited to right after you dissolve it.
