A fan that felt genuinely cool when it first turned on starts putting out noticeably warmer air after running for a while. It's tempting to assume something's wrong with it, or that the room itself just got hotter.
Neither is quite right — and the actual fix depends on understanding that this is two separate problems wearing one disguise.
The Twist: "Warmer Air Over Time" and "Cool Air" Are Two Different Problems
Running a fan for an extended stretch lets heat build up around the motor, and that heat mixes into the outgoing airflow, gradually raising its temperature. The fan isn't malfunctioning — it's just accumulating heat with nothing dissipating it. That's an entirely different problem from making the air genuinely cold in the first place, which needs an actual cold source in the airstream, not just better heat management at the motor. Treating both problems with the same fix is why a lot of DIY fan-cooling attempts fall flat.
Fix One: Slow the Motor Heat Buildup With Aluminum
Aluminum has high thermal conductivity, meaning it absorbs and disperses heat quickly. Clean and dry an empty aluminum can, flatten it, and tape it against the fan's motor housing. In one test, this measurably slowed the motor's heat buildup — around a 4–5°C difference compared to without it.
This step doesn't cool the air itself. It only slows how quickly the motor overheats, which is a separate result from making the air blowing out of the fan colder. Worth doing, but worth understanding for what it actually accomplishes.
Fix Two: Actually Cool the Air With a Frozen Bottle
To lower the air temperature itself, you need something genuinely cold sitting in the airflow. Freeze a water-filled PET bottle, wrap it in an anti-condensation cloth, and position it behind or in front of the fan so the moving air passes near it. The bottle acts as a real cold source, and air passing over it comes out measurably cooler than air alone.
There's a bonus effect during humid stretches too. The same frozen bottle setup, placed on a tray in the fan's airflow, collects ambient moisture condensing on its cold surface — a small dehumidifying effect alongside the cooling one, useful when trying to keep indoor humidity in the recommended 40–50% range during a rainy spell.
A bag of ice or a gel ice pack hung in front of or behind the fan works on the same principle. If you're using a wire basket to hold it, lining the basket with a dry towel catches the condensation drips before they become a mess — or worse, a hazard near anything electrical.
Worth Pairing With Air Conditioning Too
Running a fan on rotation while the AC is set to 26°C or higher is commonly cited as cutting cooling energy use by 20–30%, since the moving air helps remove heat from skin and lowers how hot the room feels without the AC having to work as hard.
The Trap: Assuming One Fix Solves Both Problems
The costliest mistake is doing the aluminum can trick and expecting the air itself to feel colder — it won't, because that fix addresses motor heat, not air temperature. The two need separate solutions. And whichever cold source you use — a frozen bottle or an ice pack — keep any condensation away from the fan's electrical components, keep the rear vents clear for airflow, and clean dust from the vents regularly without taking the housing apart or removing its internal lubrication. Motor overheating and warm airflow are the same underlying issue as far as fire safety goes, so a well-ventilated setup matters regardless of which cooling method you're layering on top of it.
