Your Scissors Aren't Necessarily Dull. Check the Screw First.

Scissors that sliced through tape and cardboard fine last week suddenly start chewing through everything instead of cutting cleanly — vegetables tear rather than slice, paper folds instead of parting. The instinct is to assume the blades are simply worn out and it's time for a new pair.

More often than not, the blades were never the actual problem.

The Twist: A Cutting Problem Can Be a Screw Problem or a Residue Problem, Not a Blade Problem

Scissors cut by two blades sliding past each other under slight pressure at the pivot point. A loose pivot screw lets the blades separate just slightly, which spreads the cutting force out instead of concentrating it at a clean shear point — no amount of blade sharpness fixes a problem that's actually happening at the screw. Separately, adhesive residue from tape or stickers can coat the blade surface and physically prevent the edges from meeting cleanly, which looks and feels exactly like dullness but has nothing to do with the metal's actual sharpness. Two completely different causes, both mistaken for "the scissors are worn out."

Step One: Check the Screw

If cutting feels loose, wobbly, or like the blades are shifting rather than shearing, check the pivot screw before anything else. Tighten it with a screwdriver until the blades meet cleanly along their length. This single adjustment often restores normal cutting feel on its own, with nothing else needed.

Step Two: Clean Off Adhesive Residue

If tightening the screw doesn't fix it, sticky residue from tape or labels is a likely culprit. Wipe the blades with a paper towel dampened in cooking oil — this loosens the adhesive residue — then finish with a wash in dish soap to clear away both the oil and the residue it lifted.

Step Three: If It's Still Rough, Polish the Surface

If the blades still don't cut cleanly after the screw check and the oil cleaning, the surface itself may have picked up roughness or fine residue that needs mechanical polishing. Fill a small cup with salt or sugar and cut through it repeatedly — the crystals abrade the blade surface just enough to smooth it out. Cutting through several folded layers of aluminum foil repeatedly works on the same principle.

The Step Everyone Skips: Dry and Oil Immediately After

This is the part that determines whether the salt or sugar treatment actually helped or made things worse. Leftover salt or sugar residue on the blades, combined with moisture, accelerates corrosion significantly. After any abrasive cleaning like this, dry the blades completely with a cloth and apply a light coat of cooking oil or a proper metal lubricant. Skip this step and you haven't just wasted the polishing — you've set up the blades to rust faster than if you'd left them alone entirely.

The Trap: Jumping Straight to "Buy New Scissors"

The costliest habit here is replacing scissors the moment they stop cutting cleanly, without checking the screw or cleaning off adhesive residue first — both of which are free, two-minute fixes that solve the problem more often than people expect. And treat the salt-or-sugar polish as occasional emergency maintenance rather than a regular habit — every time you use it, the drying and oiling step isn't optional, especially during humid stretches of the year when leftover residue and moisture team up fastest.
