Gnats and mosquitoes keep showing up indoors on humid nights despite a window screen that looks completely intact — no holes, no obvious damage. The instinct is to blame the mesh itself, maybe consider replacing it. The mesh was probably never the problem.

Here's What's Actually Happening: The Real Entry Point Is a Corner, Not the Screen

Between a window and its screen sits a thin weatherstripping strip called mohair, meant to seal the gap where the two meet. Structurally, though, the top and bottom corners of that strip rarely seal completely flush — there's almost always a small gap left at exactly those points. Insects need very little space to get through, and that corner gap is often doing far more of the work letting them in than any flaw in the mesh itself. In older buildings, corroded ventilation hood mesh and gaps around pipe fittings add even more of these small entry points on top of it.

What Actually Works: Check by Touch, Then Seal It

Find the gap first. Run a finger along the window frame, focusing specifically on the top and bottom corners where the mohair strip meets the frame. This is a tactile check, not a visual one — the gap is often too small to spot just by looking, but easy to feel once you're checking the right spot.

A wet wipe handles it as an immediate fix. Press a wet wipe into the gap you found — its softness and adjustable thickness let it conform to a narrow, irregular space in a way a rigid object can't, and it requires nothing beyond what's already in most homes.

For a permanent fix, go with silicone caulking along the full seam between the window frame and the screen frame. Pairing that with a finer mesh screen — in the 50–60 mesh range — adds a second layer of defense on top of the sealed corners, rather than relying on either fix alone.

Drains Are a Second, Separate Entry Point

Window corners aren't the only route. Moth flies commonly enter through sinks, rain drains, and floor drains. Installing a one-way check-valve trap — a mechanism that only opens while water is actively draining — blocks this pathway without interfering with normal drainage.

If a bathroom is going through a tile or remodeling project, it's worth verifying the seal between the toilet and the septic or sewage pipe connection specifically. Cracks in the white cement or silicone at that joint let both odor and moth flies escape, and it's far easier to check and fix during construction than afterward.

The Part Everyone Misses: Judging a Screen's Effectiveness by How It Looks

The costliest assumption here is that an intact-looking screen means there's no entry point to worry about. The actual failure point — that corner gap in the mohair strip — is essentially invisible on a quick glance and only shows up when you actually run a finger along the frame looking for it. And treating the wet-wipe fix as a permanent solution is its own smaller trap: it's a genuinely useful stopgap, but the silicone caulking is what actually closes the gap for good. Pest control here starts with a five-second touch check most people have simply never thought to do.
