Wet shoes on a rainy day usually get pointed straight at a hair dryer's hot setting for a quick fix. That heat is exactly what softens and melts the adhesive holding the sole to the upper, which is how shoes end up with a separated sole or a warped shape after what felt like a harmless shortcut. Direct sunlight causes the same kind of damage for the same reason.

What Actually Works Instead

If a hair dryer is genuinely needed, the cool or lukewarm setting only, used briefly, is the limit. The real drying should happen somewhere shaded with good airflow, with the shoe propped up at an angle, toe pointing down, so water actually drains out rather than pooling inside. Pointing a fan at the shoe from the side while it dries this way speeds things up further.

Leaving the insole in place and the laces tied while drying blocks internal air circulation, which slows drying dramatically and sets up exactly the damp conditions bacteria and odor need. Pull the insole out and let it dry separately, and loosen the laces all the way so air can actually reach the interior.

For shoes that took on a lot of mud, a light rinse of the exterior followed by drying the surface first is the right order. If a shoe absorbed a significant amount of water, blotting it out with newspaper first, then adding a silica gel packet, speeds up the rest of the drying considerably.

Silica gel packets saved from snack bags or seaweed packaging work well here and are worth collecting for this exact purpose — they pull moisture out faster than newspaper alone. Used packets can be reactivated by leaving them in direct sun for 3–4 hours, or microwaving or oven-heating them for 2–3 minutes. Charcoal handles both moisture and odor at once, which makes it the better pick when smell is the bigger concern. Several dry tea bags placed inside the shoe work on both fronts too. If neither silica gel nor charcoal is on hand, cat litter sealed inside a coffee filter and placed in the shoe is a workable substitute for both moisture and odor control.

Never Store a Shoe in the Cabinet Before It's Fully Dry

This is the mistake with the widest ripple effect. A single damp pair put away in a closed shoe cabinet spikes humidity inside that enclosed space, and that moisture spreads to neighboring shoes — left long enough, mold can work its way through the entire cabinet. Shoes go back into storage only once they're fully dry from the outside process above, never before.

Different shoe types call for different handling. Sneakers benefit from a short spin in the washing machine alongside a towel in a mesh laundry bag to pull out the bulk of the water early on. Dress shoes should skip a water wash entirely — wipe the exterior dry with a cloth and let them air-dry in the shade instead. Rain boots do best filled with newspaper or a desiccant and dried upside down in a shaded spot.

Shoe damage during a rainy stretch mostly traces back to drying habits, not the rain itself. Fixing three things — skipping direct heat, disassembling the shoe before drying, and never storing it damp — cuts down on both mold and material damage considerably. Taking a little extra care with shoes during a longer rainy season is a realistic way to protect both the shoes and foot health at the same time.
