Bathroom Silicone Mold Keeps Coming Back Because You're Only Cleaning the Surface

Black mold along the silicone caulk lines in a shower comes back within weeks no matter how often it's scrubbed. The bathroom's structure — humidity spiking fast after every shower — sets up the conditions, and body oil and shampoo residue sitting on the silicone surface feed the mold's hyphae, which have already rooted themselves deep in the caulk's microscopic pores. Wiping the visible surface never reaches what's actually driving the regrowth.

Why Sodium Percarbonate Reaches Deeper Than Scrubbing Can

Sodium percarbonate breaks down in water into sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide. That hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the mold's cell membranes, destroying the hyphae's structure directly — a fundamentally different action than bleach-based discoloration, which just strips color without necessarily killing what's underneath.

Water temperature matters more than it seems. Around 40–50°C is the range to aim for. Water that's fully boiling makes the reaction happen too fast, burning through the percarbonate's effectiveness before it has time to actually penetrate the mold — a warm solution, properly dissolved, does more work over time than a scalding one that's spent before it reaches anything.

Holding It in Place Long Enough to Work

Put on rubber gloves and a mask, and turn on the bathroom fan before starting. Lay a thin sheet of tissue or paper towel directly over the moldy caulk line, then soak it thoroughly with the percarbonate solution — enough to stay damp without running off.

Cover that with plastic wrap to block evaporation, and leave it in place for at least 30 minutes, ideally an hour or more. Once the time's up, peel back the tissue, scrub the silicone gently with a toothbrush, then rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a towel.

A Paste Version for Spots That Won't Hold Liquid

In a space where the solution keeps sliding off before it can soak in, a paste holds better. Mix sodium percarbonate with a small amount of water into a thick paste, apply it generously over the silicone, cover with plastic wrap, and leave it for 1–3 hours. Same underlying mechanism, same toothbrush finish at the end.

Deep-Set Mold Needs Repetition, Not More Product

Mold that's had time to work its way in deep often doesn't clear in a single treatment. Repeating the same process every 2–3 days gradually weakens the hyphae, and the discoloration fades a bit more with each round. If the silicone has discolored all the way through rather than just on the surface, replacing the caulk outright is the more realistic fix at that point.

Keeping It From Coming Back

After each shower, squeegee the walls and floor and run the bathroom fan for at least 30 minutes to dry things out fully — cutting down on ambient humidity does more for preventing regrowth long-term than any single cleaning session.

Removing mold really comes down to reaching the roots, not just erasing what's visible. Giving sodium percarbonate's oxidizing action enough contact time to actually penetrate the caulk's pores is what breaks the cycle of it reappearing in the same spot every few weeks.
