Using them is simple: toss 2 wipes in with the laundry and run a normal cycle. Adding too many causes the wipes to clump together, which actually reduces how well they collect lint and raises the odds of them tearing apart mid-cycle — sticking to a reasonable amount matters here.

Skip the Boil Cycle and the Dryer

Wet wipes shouldn't go into a boil-wash cycle or a dryer alongside the wipes. High heat weakens the material to the point of breaking down or tearing, which just adds a different kind of mess to the clothes rather than helping.

There's also a chemical consideration worth knowing: disposable wet wipes typically contain preservatives and surfactants, and some concern exists about trace amounts transferring onto clothing or irritating skin during a wash cycle. Used wipes always go into regular trash — never down a toilet or drain, since that's a direct path to a clogged pipe — and they're not meant to be reused after a wash cycle.

The real value of tossing wipes into the wash isn't preventing lint from forming in the first place — it's catching loose fiber before it gets a second chance to land back on the clothes. Understanding that distinction is what makes it clear when this actually helps and where its limits are. For households that wash black clothing often, a reasonable amount of thick, unscented wipes used this way is a small habit worth adopting — though anyone with sensitive skin, or washing clothing for young children, is worth weighing the chemical residue question before making it routine.
