Black Mold Keeps Coming Back on Your Shower Door for One Reason: You're Only Cleaning It From the Outside

Black mold reappears at the bottom of a shower door within days no matter how thoroughly the glass gets wiped down. The clear seal strip connecting the glass to the floor — the door sweep — is where water sits the longest, and scrubbing its outer surface does nothing for whatever's built up on the inside of it.

Why Detaching It Comes First

The seal strip is fitted snugly onto the glass, which means a brush or cleaner run over the outside never actually reaches the inner channel. Carefully removing it from the glass first lets you see and treat mold and limescale that were never visible from the outside. Ease it off slowly at the silicone or mounting point rather than forcing it — pulling too hard risks damaging the strip.

Soaking Out the Mold

Once removed, soak the strip in diluted bleach solution to loosen the mold. A properly diluted solution given enough soak time reaches mold roots embedded deeper in the material better than a short soak in something more concentrated. Work in a ventilated space with gloves on, and avoid leaving it sitting for an extended period in a sealed bathroom.

The U-Shaped Groove Needs a Toothbrush, Not a Sponge

The inside of the strip is carved into a U-shaped channel that an ordinary sponge can't reach into effectively. An old toothbrush or a narrow detail brush, worked along the curve, is what actually dislodges mold residue sitting in there. The flat outer surface can get a light wipe, but the U-shaped groove specifically needs repeated passes with the pressure adjusted to the buildup.

Full Drying Before It Goes Back On

A washed strip going back onto the glass while still wet defeats the purpose — leftover moisture in the groove creates the exact conditions mold needs to start growing again immediately. Let it dry completely in a shaded spot before reinstalling. If drying seems incomplete, wiping the grooves once more with a dry towel and giving it more time is the safer call.

White Limescale Needs a Different Approach Than Mold

If a hardened white residue remains after the mold is gone, that's usually mineral limescale, not mold — and it responds better to toothpaste or a citric acid rinse than to bleach. Scrub with toothpaste on a toothbrush, or spray on diluted citric acid (or vinegar) and let it sit for about 10 minutes before scrubbing. The acid works by softening the hardened mineral deposit, so giving it that resting time before scrubbing matters more than the scrubbing itself.

If It's Already Yellowed, Replace Rather Than Clean

A strip that's already turned yellow or gone rigid and hardened generally won't return to its original color no matter how it's cleaned — that discoloration usually reflects a change in the material itself, not just a surface stain. Replacing it outright saves more time than forcing a cleaning that likely won't work, and aggressive scrubbing at that point risks damaging the strip further for no real payoff.

Cleaning a shower door's seal strip really comes down to four steps in sequence — detaching it, treating the mold, treating the limescale, and drying fully before reinstalling — with bleach and citric acid doing different jobs depending on which problem you're actually looking at.
