A bowl of used coffee grounds tucked into a closet or shoe cabinet feels like a reasonable move — grounds have a reputation for absorbing moisture and neutralizing odor at once. In a sealed space specifically, coffee grounds can release the moisture they're already holding back out into the air, working against dehumidifying rather than for it.
Coarse Salt Is the Better Fit for Enclosed Spaces
Coarse salt's hygroscopic property genuinely pulls moisture directly out of surrounding air, which makes it a solid choice for closets, shoe cabinets, and other spaces that don't get much airflow. Coffee grounds simply aren't built for this specific job — reaching for them out of habit, in a small sealed space, can leave humidity higher than if nothing had been placed there at all.
Baking Soda Handles Odor, Not Humidity

Baking soda's mild alkalinity is genuinely effective at adsorbing odor and breaking down surface residue, but its effect on humidity across any real area is minimal. It's worth categorizing as an odor aid rather than a dehumidifying tool — using it with the expectation that it'll also fix a damp closet sets up a mismatch between the material and the job.
Mold Needs an Entirely Different Approach
Sodium percarbonate mixed with baking soda, applied to a moldy surface and rinsed off, works through the oxidative reaction that happens when percarbonate contacts water — genuinely suppressing mold growth rather than just masking it. It should be kept away from sensitive fabric, natural marble, or aluminum, since its bleaching and mildly corrosive properties can damage those surfaces.
For mold that's worked its way deep into bathroom tile grout, diluting bleach with water at a 9:1 ratio and letting it sit on the surface for at least 18 minutes is what actually breaks down the mold's structure — a quick wipe doesn't give it enough contact time. Never mix bleach with an acidic cleaner like citric acid or vinegar, since that combination releases toxic gas. Applying it to a cloth and wiping, rather than spraying it into the air, protects against inhaling it directly.
AC cooling fins are frequently aluminum, and bleach or a strong alkaline cleaner will corrode that metal — a dedicated neutral cleaner is the only safe option there specifically. For a chemical-free alternative on other surfaces, mixing 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil into 2 cups of water and spraying it on the affected area works reasonably well; store the oil itself in a sealed, dark glass bottle somewhere cool, since it breaks down with exposure to air, light, and heat.
Keeping indoor humidity in the 40–55% range is the baseline condition for preventing mold regardless of which material is handling which job. Coarse salt for dehumidifying, baking soda for odor, and percarbonate, bleach, or tea tree oil for mold each do one thing well — expecting one material to cover another's job, or mixing them together for a stronger effect, is what leads to wasted effort at best and a real safety risk at worst.
