For spots that are hard to rinse directly, wetting a towel and wiping the area, then finishing with a dry cloth, gets the same result.

Any sponge or gloves that touched a strong cleaner should get put away right after use rather than left sitting on the counter.

Keeping It From Building Up Again

A weekly or twice-weekly cleaning pass keeps buildup from reaching the point where scraping is needed at all — grease that's been sitting for years accumulates fine scratches over time that no amount of cleaning fully reverses, which is really the argument for shortening the cycle rather than deep-cleaning less often. Wiping down grease right after cooking, before it's had a chance to harden, does more than any single cleaning session later on.

Choosing a plastic scraper over a metal edge isn't really about which tool cleans more aggressively — it's picking the one that gets the grease off without leaving new damage behind in the process. Combined with a regular wipe-down habit, that's what actually keeps a kitchen surface from needing this kind of scraping in the first place.
