What actually happens inside the appliance tells a different story.

Why Getting Close to the Heating Element Is the Real Danger

An air fryer works by circulating high-heat air forced through a heating element and fan in a tight, enclosed space — much smaller than a conventional oven's interior. That tight space means a lightweight sheet of parchment paper can easily get caught in the airflow and drift toward the heating element. The area immediately around that element runs hotter than the appliance's set temperature, in localized pockets. The moment paper makes contact with the element or gets close enough, it can exceed its heat tolerance right at that spot and ignite. It's not a flaw in the material itself — the real variable is how close the paper gets to the heat source.

Weighing the Paper Down Is the Single Most Important Rule

Using parchment paper safely comes down to a specific sequence. Cut it to a size that only just covers the basket floor, without climbing up the sides or hanging over the edge. Always place food on top of it so its weight holds the paper down against the airflow. For recipes that call for preheating, leave the parchment paper out entirely during preheat, run the basket empty, and only add the paper along with the food once preheating is done and actual cooking begins.

Covering the Whole Bottom Kills the Crispiness

Lining the entire basket floor with a thick layer of parchment blocks the airflow that comes up through the bottom and side vents — which is the entire mechanism an air fryer relies on. That blocked airflow leads to uneven cooking: soggy exteriors and undercooked centers, with fries and chicken wings losing the crisp surface that's the whole point of using an air fryer in the first place. For anything greasy or prone to sticking, punching several small holes into the parchment yourself, or using a purpose-made perforated air fryer liner, keeps some grease drainage and airflow intact while still cutting down on cleanup.

The Coating Itself Is Worth a Second Thought Too

Parchment paper gets its heat resistance and non-stick surface from a silicone-based siloxane or polysiloxane coating. Some research has detected siloxane compounds on food surfaces after high-heat cooking, and separate studies have found microplastics in human tissue, including brain tissue, with higher particle counts observed in some neurological patient groups. The health implications are still an open research question, but the general guidance leaning out of that uncertainty is to avoid unnecessary high-heat, long-duration use — using it only when it's actually needed is the more cautious approach as that research develops.

A Few More Things Worth Checking

The air fryer's own exhaust vents release hot air, so keeping the unit away from being pushed right up against a wall or directly under an upper cabinet matters. Keeping flammable items — paper towels, plastic bags — clear of the space around the appliance while it's running is a basic precaution worth maintaining regardless of what's inside the basket.

Parchment paper's real risk in an air fryer isn't about the material being unsafe — it's about managing size, timing, and distance from the heating element correctly. Weighing it down with food, skipping it during preheat, and cutting it to basket-floor size only are the three habits that cut down fire risk and protect cooking quality at the same time. Skipping the paper entirely for low-mess, low-sauce dishes, and reaching for it only when genuinely needed, covers both safety and food quality without much extra effort.
