Scrubbing a Foggy Mirror Harder Is What Puts the Scratches There

A bathroom mirror comes out of a cleaning session with faint scratches that weren't there before. That usually traces back to one of three habits: scrubbing before the buildup has softened, pressing too hard, or skipping the final rinse. All three trace back to the same root cause — treating a chemical problem like a physical one.

Why Force Isn't the Right Tool Here

That buildup is alkaline, which means an acidic substance — vinegar or citric acid — can break it down through a straightforward chemical reaction rather than needing force at all. Scrubbing at hardened, unsoftened mineral deposits with a glass cleaner is what actually causes the scratching, since the deposit hasn't broken down yet and behaves like an abrasive itself under pressure.

Soaking First, With Either Acid

Mix vinegar with water at a 1:1 ratio in a spray bottle, or dissolve a teaspoon of citric acid into 200ml of water if you'd rather avoid the smell — citric acid works through the same acidic mechanism with almost no odor, which makes it the better choice in a bathroom without much ventilation.

Spray the solution generously over the affected area, then press a paper towel or wet wipe onto it — about 10 minutes for vinegar, 10–15 for citric acid. Once it's had time to soak, peel the paper towel away and wipe gently. If white residue remains after the acid treatment, a dedicated glass cleaner can finish the job — check the product's instructions first, and keep the pressure light even then.

The Rinse Decides Whether the Backing Survives

Once the buildup is cleared, rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water and dry it completely with a towel. If water beads up and rolls off cleanly after rinsing rather than clinging in spots, the contaminant has actually been removed. Leftover moisture invites new mineral deposits to start forming again, so the drying step deserves the same attention as the cleaning itself.

A small amount of hair conditioner on a dry cloth, wiped over the glass and rinsed off, helps resist future buildup and cuts down on fogging as a bonus.

For especially thick, stubborn buildup, spraying citric acid solution and then wrapping the area in plastic wrap extends the soak time considerably.

Getting a bathroom mirror clean without damaging it comes down to soak time, not scrubbing pressure. Let the acid break the mineral deposit down first, remove it gently once it's loosened, and finish with a full rinse and dry — skipping any one of those steps, even briefly, is what lets the glass backing start corroding underneath.
