Skip the Sniff Test on Old Milk. Try This Instead.

A carton of milk a few days past its date usually gets opened, sniffed, and second-guessed before a decision gets made. A glass of water settles the question more reliably than a sniff ever does. And if it turns out to be borderline rather than truly spoiled, sealed and refrigerated milk has real uses around the house well beyond drinking it.

The Water-Drop Test

Drop a bit of milk into a glass of water. Fresh milk is dense enough to sink to the bottom. Milk that's started to spoil has lower surface tension, so it spreads out flat across the surface instead of sinking. Sealed and kept refrigerated, milk can stay genuinely good for up to 45 days past its printed date — but that's only true if it's been kept below 5°C the entire time.

Canned Ham and Tarnished Silver

Soaking canned ham in milk for about 10 minutes draws surface fat out of the meat, cutting down on the gamey smell and softening the texture before cooking.

Tarnished silver jewelry responds well to a milk soak too — leave it in until small bubbles start forming, then wipe with a soft cloth and rinse. The oxidized layer lifts away, restoring the original shine. Milk that's turned slightly acidic from starting to sour actually works better here, since that acidity helps dissolve the oxidation.

Leather, Plants, and Lingering Odors

Mix water and milk at a 1:1 ratio, dab it onto a cloth, and gently wipe down a leather jacket's surface to manage light soiling. The same diluted mix wiped onto plant leaves clears dust and adds a bit of shine.

Milk's fat content absorbs odors well, too — a cup of it left uncovered in the fridge works as a passive deodorizer. Heated milk soaked into a cotton pad and pressed onto a sticker loosens the adhesive cleanly, without leaving behind the sticky residue a dry peel usually does.

A Genuinely Sturdy Natural Glue

The most unusual use is as an adhesive. Heat milk until a thin film forms on the surface, stir in a tablespoon of vinegar to curdle it, then squeeze out the excess liquid and mix in half a tablespoon of baking soda to form a paste. The whey protein — albumin — coagulates under this treatment into something strong and sticky. Applied into the cracks of a broken dish and left to dry for 24 hours, it sets into a surprisingly sturdy natural adhesive.

Next time a carton turns up a few days past date, the water-drop test settles whether it's actually gone — and if it's borderline, reaching for the silver, the leather jacket, or a broken dish gets real use out of a carton that would otherwise just go down the drain.
