The Bug Breeding in Your Drain Isn't a Fruit Fly. Treating It Like One Won't Work.

Small flying bugs near the kitchen sink usually get lumped together as "fruit flies." The one actually breeding inside a drain is a different species, with a different breeding condition — and treating it like a fruit fly problem misses where it's actually coming from.

Two Different Bugs, Two Different Breeding Grounds

Fruit flies are about 2–3mm with red eyes, and they breed around exposed food and fruit sitting out. The insect that actually breeds inside drains is a moth fly (drain fly) — 3–5mm, with gray, moth-like wings. Different size, different look, different breeding site entirely. Mistaking one for the other is exactly what delays a real fix: spraying near the fruit bowl does nothing for a population breeding in the organic film lining a drain pipe.

Pest control is more efficient aimed at the larvae than the adults. Eliminating one larva at the breeding source prevents what would have become hundreds of adults later — a much better return than swatting whatever's already flying around the kitchen.

Hot Water Works, But the Temperature Matters

Public health guidance points to pouring hot water down the drain as a baseline way to clear out larvae and eggs. Pouring it in fully boiling risks damaging or aging the pipe over time, though — water in the 50–60°C range clears the same larvae without that risk.

One more thing worth knowing: dumping baking soda or sodium percarbonate powder directly into a drain that's already clogged with debris can cause the powder to clump, making the blockage worse rather than better.

A Slow-Release Option for Ongoing Drain Maintenance

Citric acid and salt frozen into ice cubes is worth having on hand alongside the hot water flush. Fully dissolve 2 tablespoons of citric acid into 600ml of lukewarm water, mix in a tablespoon of salt, pour into an ice tray, and freeze for about a day. Placed on the drain rather than poured in as liquid, the ice melts slowly, extending contact time with the pipe walls as the mildly acidic citric acid breaks down alkaline buildup and neutralizes odor, while the salt's osmotic effect makes the environment harder for microbes to thrive in. No scrubbing or rinsing needed afterward.

This isn't a cure-all, though — heavy grease buildup or tangled hair still needs physical cleaning on top of it.

Solving a drain-fly problem isn't really about chasing down the adults flying around the kitchen. It's correctly identifying which insect is actually breeding where, then treating that specific source — a moth fly problem calls for drain maintenance, not fruit fly traps, and getting that distinction right from the start saves a lot of wasted effort.
