Power, standard cycle, start — that's the entire routine for most people running a load of laundry, with every other button on the panel going untouched indefinitely. The soak function sitting among those ignored buttons handles a category of stains that a standard wash cycle genuinely struggles with on its own.

What Soaking Actually Fixes

Time spent submerged in water gradually weakens the bond between a stain and the fabric fibers, which puts the stain in a much easier state for detergent and friction to break down once the main wash cycle kicks in.

The clearest case is yellowing on white shirts — that discoloration comes from body oil and sweat oxidizing in the fabric over time, and giving that reaction more contact time with water and detergent through a soak cycle is what actually loosens it. Grimy white socks, mud-stained kids' or athletic wear, and towels that have picked up a lingering odor are all reasonable candidates for a soak cycle too. For heavily stained white socks specifically, a 60-minute soak setting paired with 1–2 tablespoons of an oxygen-based bleach like sodium percarbonate dissolved in warm water is a commonly cited combination.

Load Size and Timing Depend on What You're Doing

Turning on the soak function usually means selecting the wash cycle first, then choosing the soak option — some machines offer set increments like 15, 30, or 60 minutes, others use an indicator light to toggle it. Either way, adding this step extends total wash time by roughly 30 minutes to an hour compared to a normal cycle.

Load size matters differently depending on the goal. For soaking specifically, filling the drum to around 70% capacity is the general guideline. For straightforward energy efficiency without a soak involved, guidance instead points toward batching laundry to fill about 80% of capacity — two different targets for two different goals, not one universal fill level.

What Should Skip the Soak Cycle Entirely

Soaking isn't universally beneficial. Wool, knits, and silk risk shrinking or losing shape from extended submersion, so they're better left out. Knitwear specifically does better with a quick approach: check the care label for the right temperature, then hand-wash it in lukewarm water with a neutral detergent for about 3 minutes, pressing gently rather than agitating.

Dark jeans risk bleeding dye into other laundry if left soaking too long. Water-resistant outerwear — hiking gear, puffer jackets with a protective coating — risks having that coating damaged by extended soak time as well. Both are better off skipping the soak cycle regardless of how dirty they look.

The soak function was just one more unused button on the panel until it's understood as a tool that depends on both the stain type and the fabric involved. Checking the care label before washing, and adjusting load size and soak time to match the actual state of the laundry, is worth doing — and running a washing machine cleaning cycle about once a month keeps odor and hygiene issues from building up in the machine itself along the way.
