Vaseline Isn't Just for Dry Lips. It's Four Different Tools in One Jar.

A jar of Vaseline usually gets reached for exactly one reason — dry lips or rough hands — and sits untouched the rest of the time. Petroleum jelly, its main ingredient, actually carries four distinct properties at once: it repels water, dissolves oil-based residue, sticks tenaciously, and reduces friction. It melts right around body temperature (about 37°C), spreading evenly the moment it touches skin or a surface, which is part of why it adapts so well across such different uses.

Water-Repelling: Faucets and Furniture Rings

A very thin layer of Vaseline wiped onto a stainless steel faucet, then buffed off completely, leaves behind a hydrophobic film that makes water bead up and roll off instead of pooling and leaving spots. Too thick a layer backfires and leaves a greasy residue, so less is genuinely more here.

The same property fixes white ring marks left by a wet glass on wood furniture. A generous layer of Vaseline left to sit lets the petroleum jelly work its way into the finish, displacing the trapped moisture responsible for the mark — wipe it off with a soft cloth afterward and the ring often fades or disappears. This only works on lacquer or urethane-finished furniture; oil or wax finishes risk discoloration, so test an inconspicuous spot first.

Oil-Dissolving: Sticker Residue and Crayon Marks

Rubbing Vaseline into leftover sticker or tape adhesive, working it with a finger until the residue balls up and lifts away, then finishing with a neutral detergent, works on glass, plastic, and metal. Paper is the one surface to skip — the oil soaks in and leaves a stain instead of cleaning it up.

Crayon marks respond to the same lipophilic mechanism, since crayon is essentially wax mixed with pigment. Rub Vaseline onto the mark in a circular motion, wipe with a paper towel, then finish with neutral detergent to clear the remaining oil.

Sticky and Slippery: A Fruit Fly Trap and a Stubborn Zipper

A small cup baited with vinegar or fruit peel, with Vaseline coated around the inside rim, traps fruit flies that fly in following the scent and get stuck on the sticky surface before they can leave. Check and replace it periodically as needed.

A small amount of Vaseline applied to a stuck zipper's teeth reduces metal-on-metal friction and gets it moving smoothly again. Applied to a sticky window track, it doesn't last as long as a dedicated lubricant, but it doesn't drip or run either, which makes it a convenient stopgap — reapply once the effect wears off.

Sealing in Moisture: Perfume, Leather, and Hair

A very small amount of Vaseline dabbed on pulse points — wrists, behind the ears — before applying perfume traps fragrance molecules in the oil layer, extending how long the scent lasts by 30 minutes to an hour or more. Too much and the scent itself can shift, so keep it to a thin fingertip application.

Dry, cracking leather responds to a small amount worked in with a dry cloth, restoring both moisture and shine — wipe once more with a dry cloth afterward so no greasy residue is left behind. On hair ends, a tiny amount warmed between the fingers first adds shine without weighing the hair down.

Vaseline's real value comes from understanding which of its four properties actually applies to the problem at hand. It's worth remembering that petroleum jelly's job is sealing in existing moisture as a barrier — it doesn't contain anti-aging or wrinkle-reducing ingredients of any kind. Matching a small amount to the right surface, and checking compatibility first when it matters, is what makes one jar cover this much ground.
