Washing Machine Odor Has Two Separate Causes. Fixing Only One Brings It Right Back.

Washing machine odor gets blamed on detergent choice more often than not, but the real causes usually split into two separate things: grime built up inside the tub itself, and lingering moisture around the drain hose. Treating them as one problem and expecting a single cleaning cycle to fix both is exactly why the smell comes back within weeks. If mold is actually visible around the machine, checking for a leak or condensation issue comes before any cleaning at all.

Soaking the Tub Long Enough to Matter

Start by filling the machine with hot water up to its maximum level. Once it's full, dissolve about one paper cup of sodium percarbonate into the water completely. Run the machine briefly — 1 to 2 minutes — just to distribute the solution evenly throughout the tub.

The part most people skip is what happens next: rather than draining immediately, let the machine sit untouched for 2–3 hours. That soak time is what actually separates the grime clinging to the tub's inner walls — the buildup fully dissolving out is a function of soak time, not how much percarbonate went in.

Skim Before You Drain

Once the soak time is up and a substantial layer of foam and grime is floating on the surface, don't hit the drain button yet. For a top-load washer, scoop out the floating debris from the surface with a small bowl or ladle first. Skipping this step means that debris gets carried straight into the drain hose during draining, where it can lodge and build up all over again — turning one clog into another.

After skimming, work a long or flexible cleaning brush 10–15cm into the drain hose opening and scrub the interior directly. The various components at the bottom of the machine are where residue and debris tend to collect, so cleaning each part individually is what actually restores full function there.

An Alternative With Regular Detergent

Regular detergent left to soak for about half a day, followed by a normal wash cycle, works as a substitute for sodium percarbonate. One safety note regardless of which cleaner is used: never combine a bleach-based product with an ammonia-based one, since that combination produces toxic gas.

Keeping It From Coming Back

The cleaning itself only addresses half the problem. Leaving the washer door open after every use lets residual moisture air-dry naturally. During humid stretches, running a dehumidifier alongside regular ventilation helps keep the space around the machine dry as well. Any standing water on the washer, the drain line, or the laundry room floor should get wiped up and fully dried right away rather than left to sit.

Tub buildup and drain hose moisture are two different problems that happen to produce the same odor, and cleaning the tub perfectly while ignoring the drain hose and humidity just lets the smell transfer back in from the other source. Treating buildup removal and moisture control as one continuous routine, rather than a single cleaning session, is what actually keeps washing machine odor from returning.
