Your AC Isn't Broken. It's Probably Just Locked.

An AC remote that gets nothing but silence on a hot afternoon makes calling for service feel like the only option. A surprising number of those service visits end with the technician finding and fixing the actual cause in about 3 seconds — usually a lock setting on the unit itself, dead remote batteries, or interference blocking the signal. Running through the check yourself first can skip the service call and the fee that comes with it.

The Lock Icon or "CL" on the Display Isn't a Malfunction

If the unit's display shows a lock icon or the letters "CL," check for a lock setting before assuming anything is actually broken. On Samsung units, holding down the temperature up and down buttons on the unit itself together for 3 seconds toggles the lock on or off. While locked, the unit's own control panel is disabled and only the remote works, which is exactly why pressing buttons on the unit does nothing.

LG units work the same way, using the temperature up button and the fan speed button held together for 3 seconds. That "CL" on the display stands for Child Lock — a setting meant to stop a child from accidentally changing settings, not an error code.

Testing Whether the Remote Is Actually Sending a Signal

If the unit isn't locked and it's still unresponsive, check whether the remote is actually transmitting. Open your phone's camera, point the lens at the top of the remote where the light emitter sits, and press any button — a working remote shows up as a flickering light on the camera screen.

Many phones filter out infrared light on the rear camera specifically, so if nothing shows up there, switch to the front-facing camera to double-check before concluding anything. If the front camera shows nothing either, the batteries need replacing. If it does flicker but the AC still doesn't respond, the problem is likely on the receiving end of the unit itself.

Interference From Nearby Lighting or Devices

If the remote is confirmed to be sending a signal and the AC still won't respond, environmental interference is worth checking next. Fluorescent lighting or another infrared-emitting device operating near the unit's receiver can disrupt the signal enough to block input.

Turning off that light source temporarily, or holding the remote closer to the receiver while operating it, can confirm whether that's the cause. If normal function returns once the interference source is removed, repositioning the light or adjusting the receiver's angle is the long-term fix.

Battery Care Between Seasons

One thing that's easy to overlook: how the remote's batteries get handled during long off-season storage. Leaving batteries installed for months at a time risks internal fluid leaking out, corroding the contacts, and eventually causing circuit damage. Removing the batteries entirely before extended storage prevents this.

When it's time to replace them, alkaline batteries are the better choice over manganese ones — they have a lower self-discharge rate and hold up chemically better over time. Replacing both batteries at once, rather than mixing an old one with a new one, keeps output balanced.

When an AC suddenly stops responding, the real issue is usually the order of checks, not whether it's actually broken. Working through lock status, remote signal, interference, and battery condition in sequence finds the cause in most cases within about 5 minutes — well before a service call would even arrive.
