One person in a group gets bitten over and over while everyone else nearby is left alone, and blood type gets blamed almost automatically. That claim has been criticized in the scientific literature as an overreach from statistics that don't actually support it — the real difference lies elsewhere, in how mosquitoes locate a target in the first place.

How Mosquitoes Actually Find Someone

Only female mosquitoes bite, since they need the protein from blood to produce eggs, and they rely on a combination of signals to find a target: carbon dioxide, body odor, and visual cues all play a role together. Mosquitoes can detect the carbon dioxide in human breath from as far as 20 meters away, and that's often the first signal that sets their approach direction. Sweat odor from the feet and skin is a major draw as well.

Alcohol raises the risk further — metabolizing it produces compounds with a distinct odor that makes a person more attractive to mosquitoes, which is part of why bites tend to pile up after drinking outdoors. Clothing color matters too: mosquitoes respond to dark tones like black, red, and navy, while white and yellow tend to get avoided. Two people standing in the same spot can have noticeably different bite counts based on clothing color alone.

Where They're Actually Getting In

Common indoor entry points, in order, are drains, balcony rainwater pipe openings, gaps where a window screen doesn't seal completely, and bathroom exhaust fan ducts. Installing a mesh barrier over the bathroom fan opening blocks that specific pathway effectively. Removing or regularly emptying any containers holding standing water addresses the breeding side of the problem rather than just the entry side.

Reducing What You're Actually Signaling

Choosing lighter-colored clothing before heading out cuts down on the visual signal. A shower after outdoor activity clears sweat and skin secretions, reducing the scent-based signal as well.

Two Myths Worth Retiring

Pressing a fingernail into an X-shape over an itchy bite has no real effect on the itching — a proper anti-itch ointment applied right after the bite is the actual recommended response. Ultrasonic mosquito-repellent apps and devices top out at roughly 30% effectiveness in testing, with much of their perceived benefit coming from a placebo-like sense of reassurance rather than an actual deterrent effect.

Mosquito activity is also starting earlier as temperatures rise — pathogen transmission risk begins around 9°C, and active feeding starts around 13°C, meaning preparation needs to start earlier in the season than it used to as the climate shifts.

Getting bitten less isn't about blood type or body chemistry someone can't control — it comes down to CO2 output, skin secretions, and clothing choice, all of which are adjustable. Combining repellent, lighter clothing, a post-activity shower, and blocking off the bathroom fan opening is a more realistic defense than anything tied to an unchangeable trait.
